Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix - Review

So basically this is a blast from the past I've been playing like crazy lately. Most ppl know of SFII: Turbo. Well Capcom hired Team Udon (The SF comic guys) to completely re-draw the game so every aspect would be in HD. The moves have also been adjusted for easier gameplay which is a good thing.

It's super fun, playing ranked is def. a challenge. And then having 6 ppl in a player match and watching the fights as you wait your turn is awesome too.

I gotta say it's kind of funny how back in the day Ryu, Ken, and Akuma used to be the cheap characters. But now it's Blanka, Zangeif, and T-Hawk. One day move from Zangeif or T-Hawk diminishes half of your life almost. And bloody Blanka seems to of been given more speed, before you know it he's smacking you in the face and then electrocuting you like it's nobodies business.

Chun-Li and E-Honda have been fixed though. Before it used to be pretty hard, (atleast for me) to get them to their rapid moves (kick for Chun-Li, punch for E-Honda). Not anymore, now you simply just tap the button like 4 or 5 times and they'll perform it at ease. One character thats still a bit zany is Vega. I haven't been able to pull off his super.

Alot of the moves have been simplified. Mostly the characters with full circle moves have been dropped for half circle moves. I couldn't do squat with Zangief back in the day, but now it works well.

And also, if you don't like the new HD Remix, the classic game's still there too which you can switch to at anytime. Along with the music and the moves untouched.

Aside from all the good stuff, there are some con's though.

There's a health bar glitch. One minute you'll be fighting and then the health bars will screw up and stop moving. So you can't see how much health you or the other player has. Hopefully there'll be a patched released to fix that.

Then there's the music. It just stops working... It'll be there one fight and gone the next. And then it'll pop on randomly when it's gone. I prefer to just fight with SFX anyways, but it is a bit annoying for it to disappear like that.

Another con is while you can watch the fight in player matches while you wait to fight, after you lose in a tournament you're stuck in the menu watching the health bars deplete. But you can't actually watch the fights, so it's more of a play-by-play thing.

The price on Xbox Live is I think 1200 pts, so about $14. Is it worth it? Absolutely. I've been putting in major hours on this game with friends and it's a freakin' party haha. Last night I went from 10pm to 3am with a group of guys I know on there playing tournaments, we had a blast. It's also good preparation for Street Fighter IV dropping February 17th.

Anybody here got it? Thoughts?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't Akuma not be in this game? Isn't it essentially the same exact game but with HD graphics?

well, appearently in the japanese release of Street Fighter 2 : the new challengers (camy, DJ, T-Hawk make first appearence)... Akuma was in it as a hidden character. You were able to fight him, but not able to unlock him. Ive never seen proof of this, but thats what i read on IGN.

akuma is in the original game, most ppl just never got to him.

it's a very tricky task too. you have to beat arcade in under 20 minutes without using any "continues". at which point if you were successful when you get to m. bison, akuma will glide in and kill him. and you end up fighting akuma. (and it was hard as hell too! fought him for freakin' 3hrs!)

as for being an playable character way back then i believe it was some odd code you had to put in at the selection screen.

now they've just thrown him in i guess as a added bonus already unlocked.
