Yo Mark!!

Can you point me in the direction of some really good really affordable markers? So far I use Microns, Pitts, and Crayola Color markers. My budget however can't afford prisma. So any help would be great. I hear your the expert on makers, and pens! emoticon

Re: Yo Mark!!

Well, right now *until the end of the year) D ickblick.com is having a big sale on Prismacolors, but as I recommended to EJ in another thread:

D*ickblick

D ick Blick has their own brand of markers that are comparable to Prismacolors, and the full set is less than $135! You're not going to find a better set on semi-pro/pro markers out there!

Tombow dual ended markers are water based (most others are alcohol based), and they're not that bad, but admittedly they're about on par with Prismacolors, price wise.

These are basically 'bottom rung' in the marker hierarchy, so the only other thing I can suggest is just save up money. These are basically the only sets you can fairly easily buy the full set. Most other markers you're better off buying individual markers (Copics are AWESOME, but unless you hit the lottery, you don't really need 23 shades of blue emoticon )

The verdict is still out on Tria markers. Apparently the first batch of the new set was 'faulty', and yes, my only experience with them was from the initial batch... (although I LOVE the ice grey set, at this point it would definitely be a "if I absolutely had the extra money" purchase).

Shin Han are a korean marker set, and have some nice colors (I bought the green gray/blue gray set, I haven't really found anything comparable color wise in any of the other sets). Biggest thing with them is they are a little hard to find (I've only found them at www.jerrysartarama.com and while the set prices are decent, I have nothing to compare them to, so they may be overpriced).

I want to try Neopiko Deleter markers, and I just discovered that Pantone has a new brand of markers, so I'll have more info on those at a later date.

Pitt also has a "big brush pen" now, which is about twice as thick as their normal brush pens. Granted, they only have like 8 colors, but if they are colors you use a lot, it may be a good investment.

I hope this helped a little. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Re: Yo Mark!!

Oh yeah, to add a little "compatibility" thing:

When it comes to pens, Copics and Prismacolors are "compatible". IOW, they will pretty much stand up to the same pens, or make those same pens bleed.

Trias are VERY unpredictable, and have so far shown almost no compability pen wise, with Copics and Prismacolors.

For the Copic Multiliners, the Copic markers and Prismacolors don't cause them to bleed. But Trias do make them bleed.

Mars Staedtler Pigment Liners, you need to give extra time to dry no matter what markers you use, but the Copics/Prismas are more likely to make them bleed than the Trias.

Since alcohol based markers come in either pigment base, or dye base, I'm guessing that that is the issue (although I actually thought all three were pigment based, I could be wrong).

I have found that Zig Millenium Markers (usually found in the scrapbooking section) have so far held up to ALL markers, with minimal drying time.

Might want to check AC Moore (I saw there's one in Jacksonville). They regularly put coupons in their ads for 40-50% off one item. If I really need them I'll buy the 24 marker sets that are normally $80 for $40! Then if I need some single colors, I'll buy them in store or at D*ick Blick (cheaper at D*ick Blick, but you have to factor in shipping especially if you're only buying a few).

http://www.acmoore.com

Speaking of D*ick Blick, not sure if it's still going on, but they had a great sale on warm and cool grey marker sets for about $20. I ordered sets of each a little while back.

Hobby Lobby carries sets of Prismas and also sells Copics (singles). And if you join their mailing list, you can print out 40% off coupons. You can print out as many as you like, but can only use one per purchase. Still worth it though. I was able to get a $100 drafting table for $60 that way! =D Also stocked up my Prismacolor colored pencils that way!

And don't be afraid to look through Feebay! I found a set of 132 Prismacolor color pencils for $87.99 with free shipping! A set of 120 sells for $150 and more at most art supply stores. I'm sure you can find some good buys on markers if you look. Probably find some Copics there too.

I also think that in certain regions, you can use Hobby Lobby coupons at Michaels, and vice versa. Traditionally though, Michaels has been overpriced on markers. It only takes a few markers (plus shipping) to order online to match the price you'd pay at Michaels. And I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't buy just a couple at a time emoticon

GUILTY!!

Tell me about it! A couple weeks ago, I went to Hobby Lobby looking for a couple different shades of blue Prismacolor pencils, and ended up getting 10 loose pencils and another whole set of 24 (portrait colors). LOL!

Now to turn that focus on getting some markers and brush tip pens!!

What kind of brush tip pens are you looking at? The Faber Castell Pitt brush pens? (higher quality), or just something for experimenting? I found Prang has a set of brush pens. About medium quality but they do serve a purpose.

Prang Brush Pens

They're not actually that bad, but if you are looking for more blendable colors with better shade choices, definitely go with the Pitt Brush Pens.
