Request artwork bid

Hi everyone,

I have never done this before so if I am making a mistake please don't hesitate in letting me know... Last year I found this online proggy that let me create my own "superheros" and I went nuts Image

Before I knew it I had made comic book heroes out of every member of the Runboard staff, received permission from Thor (Runboards owner) to use the pics in a Runboard style calendar (as a non-profit venture) and even had a DTC deal going until the DTC company went under. There, got the background done...

I still have all of those computer generated pics (with backgrounds) but there is no way for me to actually change the poses or anything for the resulting superheroes and I would like to try doing the Runboard calendar project again. The only question really is if any real artist would be willing to help on this and how it would be handled. My pockets are not deep and the project itself wouldn't generate much in sales (but hopefully enough to cover costs).

Anyone interested? Should I post the pics I created here or somewhere else? How do we proceed?

Well, first off, are these computer generated (ie 3d) images, or more like comic style imagery? (maybe you should post some pics).

If I'm correct, you want to do a new calendar, using the same (original) designs, just new poses and whatnot?

That was a fast reply emoticon

I don't know the terminology that would describe the pics properly. Here is one of them so you can let me know how they should be described... this was supposed to be the January pic... I did my best to create background images that were at least sort of like a high end graphic comic to go with the computer generated superhero drawing. Should I post all the pics here in this forum? I don't want to violate any of the rules you folks have set up here... Yes, the original designs for the characters would be best though artistic license used to make the drawing more... natural/realistic as a comic book character is totally acceptable.

Yeah, the photo backgrounds are a little awkward (it's extremely difficult to match a photo background to hand drawn foreground, and usually requires plenty of photoshop filtering emoticon )

I'd say post specifics. Are you looking for someone to draw the characters and the backgrounds, or just the characters (and you're going to do something similar to the backgrounds that you did earlier. Just a note: backgrounds added will definitely be more work, so people would ask for more money). Specify how many pics you're looking for (I'm guessing a twelve month calendar isn't so obviously 12 pics, since there's usually a cover, too at least). Post when you're looking to have the artwork done by, if you need the pics to be color (or if black and white is acceptable), and very important, your budget (or budget range). Also include the size of the artwork. If you're looking for twelve 11x17 pieces in color, and are offering 10 bucks an image, you might not get that much interest. Know what I mean? Also, you *might* get some more interest if you're willing to divvy up the work (say one artist can't do all the images you require, if you'd be willing to let someone else do the remaining images, etc, but this goes in part back to your deadline).

I'm an artist, too (I just don't post that much art here), and I can tell you that the more information you can share initially about the project, the more likely you are to get a response. emoticon

OK...

The company that would be printing the calendars is FedEx Office and their standard size for a 13 pic calendar is 8-1/2" x 11".

I am looking for full color with background I think since that gives the artist much more freedom on the final look.

Different artists for the pics would be fine as well and full credit for the artwork including web links would be given both in the month and on the back inside cover page.

The backgrounds do not have to be the photo-realistic style, I think it would be nicer if both the character and background actually matched as far as treatment is concerned don't you?

When I created the characters initially I had all Global Administrators having some type of electrical power evident, either from them personally or from their main artifact while all Runboard moderators had some type of light or mental power indicated.

My budget is limited but I want to be fair to the artist. Had I discovered this site sooner I could have set it up better but obviously I need to have the project done by the end of November if the calendars are to be for this year and that limits me considerably on what could be paid prior to publication. That said I think my maximum payout would have to average less than $50 per pic unless the artist is willing to take a chance and go by a percentage commission on sales which is what I will be doing to recover my costs. Am I being realistic here or should I be planning this as a 2011 calendar?

Both actually emoticon

I don't think $50 per pic is bad (that would still come to $650 for the project). You *might* have some trouble getting artists to fill (that's why I suggested being willing to have several artists working on the project, which graciously, you are).

But I also suggest planning for a 2011 calendar, just because it couldn't hurt to start planning early emoticon (remember, a lot of stores and businesses start planning for Christmas on December 26th emoticon).

I could probably take a few pics myself (I have a vacation coming up in November, so having a few extra bucks for it couldn't hurt).

Another question I guess would be, do you prefer computer coloring, hand coloring, or whatever works best for the artist?

(also, make sure you get the file specifics from your printer. likely an 8.5x11 tif (compressed or not) would be fine, but you just never know. They may prefer pdf files, and there may need to be a gutter space to allow for 'shifts' in the printing, etc. So that might affect the final file size/type.

Re: Request artwork bid

I am thinking the timing on this one is just way to close for the slick version I want to get done so I think a better approach is to do the 2010 calendar with a single "group shot" and tear off months. This gives much more time to the artists involved as he or she only has to get the one picture done by November 25 and I get to discover what will be involved in getting the finished product delivered. Then we can go with the "slick look" calendar for 2011 and have a good 10 months to get it right...
