Any chance anyone knows how to fix these things?
Depends on what the problem is. Most of the time it is the chips over-heating because of the stupid place they are put on the motherboard. Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to put it under the hot running dvd drive.
They put the 4 operating chips under the dvd drive under 2 large x-plates and each having these thin cheap pink styrophoam heat absorbing pads which dont do jack. Best 'close to permanent' fix (not sending it to micro$oft cuz they will temporarily fix the problem)
is to buy the Thick grey absorbing heat sink pads online and soldering them on yourself or have someone with the knowledge of how to do it right do it for you.
Complete guides can be found on www.afterdawn.com
hope that helps

Well I do, but i only do local orders. Souther Cali only. I used to do anyone from USA but sh*t just gotta outa hand so i just stick to southern california residence. Plus im behind as it is. i have 16 units lined up for fixin.
Also, im not picking on you kissfan but there is a lot of people with that attitude that makes it possible for Microsoft to do this to people. They figure people are willing to buy another high priced brick so they just keep making them the crapiest they can, knowing that people will just buy another one when it breaks. Im not down for that. I will never buy a new xbox from microsoft. i always buy off my customers that are tired of dealing with the crap.
I understand your view completely bud and I can seee why it would really frustrate you but I have no choice really. I am not technically minded like you are when it comes to electronics... I am not bad when it comes to navigating my way around things.... Ask me about legal issues or advanced mathematics and maybe but I am useless when it comes to electronics. This event may spur me on to learn though. (And in saying I want to get an elite it is mainly cause I would like the bigger hard drive and if I fix the other one and have a spare I can take it with me anywhere i go out without having to unplug everything)
I think Microsoft rip people like me off constantly (And I admit we are stupid (And yes I will use that word) enough to buy into it and keep paying for it) but at the same time the people who fix these locally that I have spoken to are just as bad and its going to cost me with labour and parts between $100-160 (from three separate sources) to get them fixed when I could buy a brand new one for $250.
I think Mark got it right.....
I also miss the days when you could just blow into the damn cartridge and system and everything was ok!

$100-$160 !@#$! i need to start charging more......nah!!! thats a rip and i wouldnt feel right about myself.
The heatsink pads are only like $15-$20 and it only takes like 10minutes to do the work. So they are charging you $840/hr (i think) for such an easy job.... i always charge the price for the pads and $30 dollars for labor. i have never charged over $60.....usually charge $50. So sad that people just cant help people, thats whats wrong with the world today. Nothing but greedy, selfish people.
